Atopic dermatitis (eczema)

A skin condition characterized by dry itchy skin. The skin can become red and at times form fluid filled sacs or blisters. Patients usually have this condition all their lives and it is more common in infants and children. Atopic dermatitis is believed to be caused by an overactive immune system causing patients to react to certain substances more than the general population. People with this condition are more likely to have allergic rhinitis and asthma.
