Miller Fisher Syndrome (rare nerve disease)

A rare disorder that causes weakness of the eye muscles followed by weakness and incoordination of the arms and legs. It is felt to be a variant of Guillain-Barre syndrome. Like that syndrome, it tends to occur after a viral infection. This disorder can be very serious and lead to weakness of the breathing muscles and death. This disease is felt to be caused by an abnormal production of antibodies. Most patients with this disorder will recover with treatment but total recovery can take as long as 6 months.
