Benzyl alcohol is used as a preservative in various medications and as a topical agent for the treatment of head lice.
As a topical treatment for lice, benzyl alcohol works by physically suffocating the lice. It prevents the lice from closing their respiratory spiracles, leading to their death. In other formulations, it acts as a bacteriostatic preservative by disrupting the cell membranes of microorganisms.
