About Loperamide
What it is for
Used for the symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea.
How it works
Loperamide is an opioid receptor agonist that acts on the mu-opioid receptors in the intestinal wall. It slows down intestinal motility by inhibiting peristalsis, which allows more time for fluid and electrolyte absorption in the bowel. This results in firmer stools and a reduction in the frequency of bowel movements.
Dosage
The usual starting dose for adults is 4 mg, followed by 2 mg after each loose stool, not to exceed 16 mg per day.
